Anyone reading this right now can likely name at least one person they know who has dealt, in some way, with breast cancer. Every year, the month of October is dedicated to raising awareness about this horrific disease. This global campaign aims to educate people about the importance of early detection, support those affected by the disease, and raise funds for research.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is the perfect time to remind all women to get their annual mammogram.  Here at P.O.W.E.R. we are always talking about the importance of self-care, and getting a mammogram should be number one on your priority list of the things you make time for, no matter what.

Detection plays a crucial role in improving breast cancer outcomes. Regular mammograms are recommended for women over the age of 40, as they can detect abnormalities in breast tissue before they become noticeable through physical examination. Mammograms have been proven to reduce mortality rates by detecting cancer at an early stage when treatment options are more effective.

In between mammograms, it is important to pay attention to our bodies and consult our doctor if you find any of these symptoms:

  • Lump in the breast or underarm (armpit)
  • Thickening or swelling of part of the breast
  • Irritation or dimpling of breast skin
  • Redness or flaky skin in the nipple area or the breast
  • Pulling in of the nipple or pain in the nipple area

If you do have breast cancer, or know someone who needs assistance, P.O.W.E.R.’s fall issue includes a comprehensive guide listing nationwide resources that are available to breast and other cancer patients and their loved ones.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month also provides an opportunity to support charities dedicated to fighting breast cancer. This year, P.O.W.E.R. has chosen to support the Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition (BBCC) at our annual Awards Gala which will be held on October 19. A portion of the proceeds from the silent auction and raffles will be given to this incredible organization that assists individuals in the Babylon Township Community of New York who have been diagnosed with breast or gynecological cancer or who has a loved one that has been affected.

If you want to donate to the BBBC, visit www.babylonbreastcancer.org/GetInvolved.html  Or, you can donate to any of the following organizations dedicated to fighting breast cancer:

  • American Cancer Society
  • Breastcancer.org
  • Breast Cancer Research Foundation
  • Living Beyond Breast Cancer
  • National Breast Cancer Foundation
  • Susan G. Komen Foundation
  • Young Survival Coalition

In addition to financial contributions, there are other ways you can show your support during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. There are many local events such as charity walks or runs that raise funds for breast cancer research. Find one in your area and participate!

Wearing pink ribbons or clothing items with breast cancer awareness symbols can also help spread the message and start conversations about the importance of early detection. You can make it fun – the Tonia’s Talk section of our fall magazine features a bunch of great ways to include pink in your wardrobe and support the cause!

Most importantly, Breast Cancer Awareness Month serves as a reminder that we all have a role to play in the fight against breast cancer. By spreading knowledge, supporting charities, and encouraging regular screenings, we can make a difference in the lives of those affected by this disease.  By coming together as a community, we can help work towards a future where breast cancer has a cure.

Early detection saves lives. Schedule your mammogram today!
